Following the Interschool Cross Country earlier this year, this time it was the turn of the top five placed runners from each year and gender to compete against the best of the best! A very competitive field, with Mellis children figuring very prominently! A fine race run by all them, and it is worth remembering that these runners are all in the top ten of their gender/year group across thirty schools!
The School fielded three teams for the Hockey Inter-School Tournament recently, and took Gold, Bronze and Fith places. Another fine showing!
The School reprised its annual Interschool Cross-Country Event at Mellis Common on Friday, with over 300 children competing! A fine showing of Mellis runners in the top five for each category!
Mellis took Gold at the recent InterSchool Netbal Tournament, with the other team taking an honourable fourth! With coaching from an Olympian Netball team, a grand day!

Our Year 6 sports captains have organised a week long series of PE activities for the whole school, raising £400 in the process! As well as activities at lunchtime, we also had Karate demonstrations to raise the profile of outside sports!
A huge well done to the KS2 Atheltics team who represented the School so well at the County Finals at Athletics! This achievement puts them in the top 3% of Suffolk Primary Schools!

The Mellis Netball acquitted themselves admirably at the recent Netball meet, winning 4 games out of 6 and drawing the fifth! They also took away nearly half the commendations for good sportsmanship despite being only 1 of 11 competing schools!

The whole School went for a long distance run around the perimeter of the grounds this morning in support of Sports Relief!
Members of year 3 and 4 participated very positively at the recent Panathalon event, with a range of different activities focussing on different skill sets. They all said they wanted to go back to next year's event, so that is what we shall do!
Members of year 5 and 6 went to compete in a local Sportshall athletics event. They all did incredibly well in their field and track events. The track events were particularly close with other teams! Overall, the team came second and were really proud of their achievements.
The Basketball Team brought back Bronze medals after taking part in the under 11’s tournament at Debenham Leisure Centre. Well done to all the children!
Thanks to Scarlet’s superb artistic skills and the £1000 gained from the competition she entered the school has been able to purchase lots of new play equipment for playtimes and lunchtimes. Our team of year 6 pupils have taken on the role and responsibility to lead play at playtimes! Well done to all who volunteered to become a play leader and of course to Daisy once again! As you can see from the pictures below, it is fair to say the new equipment has been a big hit with all!
Year 4 and 5 have been receiving hockey coaching lesson from Harry Reidy – a coach at Magpies Hockey Club in Harleston! It’s safe to say the childfren are really enjoying these coaching sessions and will even be visiting the hockey club soon to train and play on the astro at Magpies – very exciting!

22 Year 4s made the trip out to Stradbroke on Friday last, where they practised the cardinal character traits of sportsmanship, positive attitude and resilience in a range of different games! Blessed with good weather, they player Tchoukball, an outdoor version of Benchball, and Dodgeball against other schools. They acquitted themselves very well, both in terms of the attitudes shown and the games played!
The School despatched two teams to the InterSchool Rugby Tournament on Wednesday, and a good time had by all. Super to see such lovely sportsmanship and team work, and all had reason to be proud of their efforts. Well done to the Development team who took Bronze!
Mellis CE School hosted the traditional Cross Country Run for nearly 400 pupils from Years 3 - 6 on Friday. With the wind at their heels, the pupils of the School dug deep and ran magnificently well; grand stuff from all concerned!

Well done to our team of cricketers who finished in 2nd place and secured the silver medal at the tournament at Stradbroke last week. They put on a terrific display of skill and demonstrated all round super sportsmanship throughout! Well done team!
What a superb result at the Quadkids for the Mellis Athletics team this week. Congratulations to the year 1/2 team who secured the bronze medal and the year 5/6 team who brought home the silver – a fantastic result for both teams. And, a huge congrats to the year 3/4 who finished first bringing home yet another Gold meal! Wonderful sportsmanship all round too, well done team!

The Year 3s and 4s Tennis team represented the Schooll very well indeed, with one team scoring Gold, and the other narrowly missing the final by only two points! Well done to them as well!
A huge congratulations to the schools gymnastics teams for yet another wonderful display this year! All of our teams have worked tremendously hard over the last term and competed brilliantly at the competition. The year 3/4s placed fourth out of the 6 teams competing, demonstrating superb skills and team work. Our year 1/2s finished first out the four teams competing, and secured the Gold medal, as did the year 5/6 team – a superb result well done!
Both teams will now go on to compete at the County finals on the 5th July at Bury St Edmunds. A huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who helped train the teams in the run up to the event – your support is simply invaluable!
Thanks to the money raised during the ‘Sports for Champions’ fundraiser the school has been able to purchase a brand new sports kit as modelled by our wonderful Sports Captains! The kit now represents our ‘Mellis’ colours with the school name printed on the back! In total 16 brand new kits have arrived and are ready and waiting to be worn for the next competition. Thank you to you all for a superb fundraising effort!
Well done to the school rugby team who attended the competition at Thomas Mills this week. Our team, without any practises (thanks to the ‘Beast from the East’) arrived somewhat unpractised and under prepared. However, they played brilliantly and were able to secure themselves 4th place in the tournament. A superb performance, well done all!

On Sunday 23rd May, children from Mellis School attended the Stradbroke Aquathlon where by children competed in a swimming and running race. The event tested the children’s stamina and strength across both sports and we are delighted that all our pupils finished the race securing themselves a medal. Huge congratulations to all involved!

Congratulations to the Sportshall Athletics Team who came second at the indoor competition on Wednesday 17th January 2017! The team excelled in the track events and demonstrated real talent in many of the races. Pupils from across KS2 participated in the event and their combined scored awarded them a team Silver! Well done to everyone involved. A special thank you to the wonderful Miss Frost who also helped organise both the athletics training session and club!
Well done to all the Key Stage 2 children who participated in the Pyramid Mellis Cross Country run on Friday 16th October. Over 500 children from schools over the pyramid attended the superb long distance running event. Despite the cold, all the children ran with such grit and determination! Well done everybody! A special shout out to those Mellis children who finished in the top 5 of their race and will go onto to compete in the finals competition which will be held later in the year! Also thanks must go to Mr Ryle, Mr Cattermole, Mrs Clay and Mrs Maclean who help organise the event.
On Friday 30th September all the pupils throughout the school experienced a 30 minute taster session of Karate. We were visited by Shaun, a black belt Karate instructor, who gave the children a demonstration and then led a 20 minute group Karate activity. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session as you can see from the photos.

On Tuesday 26th January our brilliant athletics team travelled to Framlingham to compete in the 2016 sportshall athletics. Comprised of indoor track and field events, they showed great determination and strength, and won many of their track events. Huge congratulations to all involved and as always to the wonderful parents for helping to transport- we couldn't do it without you!

They did brilliantly and won all of their games before being knocked out in the semi-finals of the competition by 1 goal! Congratulations to all the pupils who competed in the Mellis Cross Country on Friday 16th October. Once again the event was a huge success with over 450 pupils across Key Stage 2 competing from across the local area! A huge congratulations to Mellis children who finished 2nd in the year 6 girls race, 10th out of the year 6 boys, 2nd in the year 4s race and 1st in the year 5s race! All of who will now compete in the finals which will take place later in the year! Well done to all involved and a huge thank you to those who helped to both organise and run the event!

Although both keen footballers, these two pupils are always keen to participate in all types of different sports and represent the school on a regular basis in many different events. On Friday 10th July the Suffolk Games were held in Bury St Edumnds! We were lucky enough to qualify to take part in 4 of the events, the Year 1&2, Year 3&4 and Year 5&6 Gymnastics and the Year 3&4 Tennis Finals. The children had great fun participating in the opening ceremony and parading around the track with the school flag! The children all performed brilliantly and had lots of un competing. The year 5&6 team even walked away with the Gold medal and are now the top team in Suffolk in Gymnastics! Well done to all involved. We're very proud of you!

A massive thank you to all those children who collected sponsorship money for the Sports for Schools Fundraiser! We have managed to raise in total £1668, 60% of which, our school can put towards ordering lots of new and exciting playground and PE equipment! Thank you to everyone for your support!
At the weekend Poppy and Ella both competed at the Gymnastics competition in Attleborough. Poppy finished in 3rd place and Ella came 1st. A wonderfl result for both talented girls. Well done, we're very proud of you!
On Monday 22nd June the year 5 & 6 pupils competed in the Swimming Gala at Diss Pool. All pupils competed brilliantly and the children finished in 2nd place, narrowly missing out on the top spot by just 5 points, Mellis' best ever result in the swimming. In total the team secured 2 gold medals, 1 silver and a bronze! Well done to all involved and thank you to Mrs Scates for organising and taking to the team along to the event!
On Saturday 20th June, two year 6 pupils, Imogen and Tom, competed in the Great East Swim which is an an outdoor swimming event and takes place annually at Alton Reservoir, Holbrook, Suffolk. Imogen finished 3rd overall and 1st in the girls, a real triumph well done Immy! Congratulations to Tom too who also finished 8th out of 50 competitors! Well done to them both, a truly fantastic race!
On Tuesday the 16th of June Mellis cricket team went to Stradbroke Cricket ground to compete in the heats for the county cricket final. They did superbly well and finished top of their group, narrowly missing out in a place in the final. A huge congratulation to the 10 year fours and fives that came third in the tournament and played brilliantly, showing great team spirit and sportsmanship throughout.
On Friday 12th June, Mellis was extremely fortunate to have a visit from British Gymnast, Danny Lawrence. Danny was England's Commonwealth Captain in 2010 where he won the mens silver medal for gymnastics! He spent time working with the children completing a fitness circuit, putting all the pupils through their paces completing a series of aerobic challenges. In order to raise money for both the school and future British athletes, the children have been very busy gathering sponsorship money (total to be announced next week). Danny even showed of some off his superb skills to the children including, backwards somersaults (without hands) and walking handstands! Our year 5/6 Gym team in turn then showed off their winning routine, and received some wonderful feedback from a very impressed Danny! On Wednesday 3rd June 2015 the year 3&4 tennis teams attended the tournament at Framlingham High School. All teams played fantastically well and finished in both 1st and 2nd place, an absolute triumph! Well done to all involved! Bring on the finals in June! Congratulations to all involved!
Congratulations to all 4 gymnastic teams who competed at Thomas Mills HS on Wednesday 29th April in the Key Steps Gymnastics competition. Mellis secured the ‘Gold’ medal in each of the three events!

Now in its fifth year, Mellis School hosted the Annual Inter-Cluster Cross-Country Run, with participation of over 100 children who were fianlists from the earlier Pyramid events. Mellis children took Bronze on both Year 5 Girls' and Year 3 Boys' races, and Gold in Year 4 Boys'. Thanks all for their support and participation.
A huge congratulations to Katie, our fabulous year 6 netball captain, who has been recently training with the 'Thetford 3' Netball team in Norfolk. After only a few short months she has already been picked to play for the under 14s team (3 years older than her actual age!) We are very proud of you Katie!
Congratulations to the Mellis School Quicksticks team who came second in the pyramid Quicksticks tournament! It was the first time Mellis school had ever reached further than the group stages of the competition and Mrs Kaufman (the school PE coordinator) was thrilled that Team A were able to secure the silver medal after a tense final with SRH Framlingham! Well done to all three teams who took part in the competition. Yet again the team work and superb attitudes of the children were outstanding!
Congratulations to the Mellis School Netball team who secured both the Gold and the Silver medal at the recent High 5s Netball Tournament at Hartismere High School. After both teams won their groups and their semi final the scene was set for a mighty Mellis final! After a very tense and thrilling final, the A team won by just one goal! Mrs Clay (our school netball coach) was extremely proud of all the children who took part! Yet another fantastic win for our school. Well done to all our medallists and a huge thank you to Mrs Clay for once again training the team and accompanying them to the tournament!
A huge congratulations to both teams who entered the Tag Rugby tournament at Diss RC! After a truly remarkable final Mellis A team finished in first place and sealed the Gold medal! Mellis B team also played extremely well and finished 3rd in their group. An absolutely fantastic result for all involved. Not only did the children demonstrate superb skills but also wonderful sportsmanship! Congratulations 'Team'!
Congratulation Imogen for yet another wonderful medal haul at the recent Diss Otters inter-club competition. Imogen won 9 of her races securing a gold meal and finished second in two, receiving two silver medals. She also won the 'BAGCATS' plaque which goes to the overall winner of points from a selected number of races! Go Imogen!

Well done to the Basketball team who came 3rd in the tournament held at Stradbroke High School on Friday 6th March. The team played very well and thoroughly enjoyed all their matches. A big thank you to Miss Whymark for both training and accompanying the tem to the tournament.

Congratulations again to Holly for competing in the ‘Under 13s - Keith Ward Memorial Games’ in Kings Lynn. A keen athlete, Holly is now competing in a number of competitions outside school. Holly performed brilliantly and secured the following medals:
Shot Putt – Gold Medal – 4 metres 49 cm
Long Jump – Silver Medal – 3 metres 84 cm – Ranking 27th in the UK and 5th in East Anglia!
60m sprint – Bronze Medal – 9.2 seconds – Ranking 58th in the UK and 4th in East Anglia.

Well done to Albert who competed in the 2015 Boys Under 11s Schools Table Tennis Championship. He finished in 3rd place out of a staggering 28 children from around Suffolk. Albert is a keen ping-pong player and is currently a member of Stowmarket Table Tennis Club. Congratulations again Albert, we’re very proud of you!

Congratulations to Holly Harrison for competing in the Norfolk Sportshall County Championships, she received medals in the four of the different events. Well done Holly! She will also now go on to compete for Norfolk in the regional finals and we wish her all the luck in the world!

Congratulations to the Athletics team who came 3rd in the Sportshall Athletics tournament at Framlingahm on Thursday 3rd December. The event involved competing in lots of different track and field events which the children thoroughly enjoyed! A technicality with team numbers meant we were unable to finish in 2nd place (even though we did secure the second highest number of points and were only 4 points away from 1st place). However, the team of 20 pupils from year 5 & 6 are of course delighted to with their bronze medals. Well done to all involved!
Well done to the Mellis School Netballers who won the pyramid netball cmpetiton at Stradbrok on Friday 28th Novemebr. The team played extraordinarily well and won all of their matches, A fantatsic result, well done! The 2nd team also played fantatsically well with Mrs Clay commenting on their superb skills and the level of confidence displayed. A huge thank you to Mrs Clay for training the team and accompanying them to the match. Thanks must also go to all the parents who came along to support. We're very proud of you girls, well done! Now bring on the High 5s competiton next term....!
Congratulations to the Mellis Football team who came 3rd out of 27 teams at Stradbroke! The team narrowly missed out on a place in the finals but played extraordinarily well in their final match. Well done to the B team as well who also only lost one of their games!. Miss Corke was delighted with their performance and praised both teams for their outstanding sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Well done Mellis, we’re very proud of you! .
Due to the extensive hardwork of our very Mrs Kaufman, Mellis has achieved the Sainsbury's Games Bronze award!

After finishing in first place at the Pyramid Gymnastics competition last month, both the KS1 and KS2 Gym Team travelled to Bury St Edmunds on Friday for the Suffolk Games County finals. Twelve teams were entered from all over Suffolk and we are delighted to announce that the KS1 team finished in 2nd place securing a silver medal for the team! A truly wonderful result, well done! The KS2 team also put on a fantastic display and secured 5th place in the finals. A huge well to all the children who competed! The KS1 team will travel to Brentwood in Essex on Tuesday to compete in the regional finals! Wish us luck!

Mellis School Cricket Team secured a fantatsic result at the pyramid competition at Worlinghamworth Cricket Club on Monday. A total of 12 teams took part in the event with Mellis finishing 3rd! Superb, a huge well done to all those involved!
