Where have we come from?

Mellis School has for many years embraced a programme of continual planned improvement as a means of raising standards across the curriculum. This progamme has covered change on two broad fronts, specifically infrastructure and quality of teaching and learning. 

Infrastructure

Buildings – The increasing popularity of the school and consequential rise in the pupil role has enabled us to rise from a three classroom establishment to one of seven classrooms. This has resulted in single age classrooms and a maximum class size of 24 children. Specialist facilities have been created including a good size hall for PE, assemblies and stage productions, a music room, disabled toilet facilities, Art/Design Technology/Cookery room and a purpose built Reception classroom with a corresponding safe and secure outside area.

Grounds – The school grounds have developed from a single playground and field to an additional hard surface quiet play area, another field and half an acre of woodland.

Staffing – As the school size has increased the opportunity to employ a range of teaching and support staff with a range of specialist subject skills has been possible. The school has employed and developed high quality, dedicated staff to enable each class to benefit from a teacher supported by a teaching assistant. Mellis School was one of the very first schools in Suffolk to employ this winning strategy.
